e komo mai spring!  finally hit yesterday w/ temps in the high 60's, literal CROWDS of people on the trails around lake calhoun when i walked down there w/ seger, who is so very happy.  the feeling of lightness and elation grew today as i dusted + busted out my bike, got my taxes in the mail and cruized the DUDES in uptown.  took seger back to the sparkling lake where we both dipped our feet in the clear, cold water.  uptown hipsters were out in force on alt bikes, wispy mohawks and the like fluttering in the breeze of motion, wan hair finally breathing free after a cold season of confinement under quirky caps.  today is the day steve would usually be home from hawai'i to do his taxes, but he and his tax guy figured out a way to do them over the phone to allow him to stay and keep working on that awesome remodel job - so he can make some money to pay taxes on next year.  so we're sailing into a new era of tom-A-hawk solo.  spring has also brought renewed pangs of missing kdogg, but lo + behold i return from the lake to find a fresh spring mix from kdig hisself sprouting out of my mailbox!  [incl bole 2 harlem, the ponys, ghostland observatory, homeliss derelix, amadou + mariam, and illinois ... thanx K!!!]  as the world thaws magic is flowing, the bunny has returned to the garden and i am even somewhat overwhelmed by it all.  to celebrate and channel the mana, the traditional tax day party will go ahead in stevie + kdogg's honor: this time w/ kung + his boyz @ an open bar party tonite @ temple.  c u there!

a belated happy easter story for you: there’s a bunny that’s been hanging out in our garden; regularly, and in the same spot.  was very eastery this weekend until i forgot about it and took one bigboy tom-A-hawk hOp, from the last step on the deck to the sidewalk in the backyard while i was sayin goodbye after a little party w/ dustin on saturday - and scared it away.  was hoppin, i mean hopin it would come back but i never saw it again, until i kicked a lawnchair off the deck this morning (i had my reasons) and scared it away again.  tom-A-hawk!  but it didn’t run all the way out of the yard this time, it stayed and i think gave me a little attitude even.  which i believe is progress. [easter sunday i kept my phone off, played guitar, did qi gong + caught up w/ my fambly on da landline.  then i went to kung's for drunken ham leftovers.]

whoa i’m still hangin on to hawaiian time bigtime + i’ve been back for a almost a week.  sleeping til noon - noon-thirty.  tried my hardest to go to sleep at a reasonable hour last night (11:00) and get up at a more respectable local hour this morning - i did better but i still slept until 10:30.  and since it’s been kind of a nonstop party since i got back last wednesday i’m trying my hardest to stay in tonight - it’s freezing rain out there!  it’s tuesday!  but it IS $1 beer night at the eagle...

what makes an awesome day: steve gave me the morning off so i could go for a fun hour surf [surfed the left shoulder, smokin da muscleboys :p ]; then, after the 10-minute break that always starts our work day when the #2 bus takes its pit stop on the way around kapiolani park, i got to work just in time for lunch! and then i don't even have to work because steve needs some stuff from homo depot before we can proceed! which is all good because we've been crankin: all the cabinets built + faced now ... just still no doors. so - score day off, always its own bonus; but THEN, when we get home after 'work' i call the american airlines advantage desk and successfully extend my stay a whole week - w/ a tighter connection + NO CHANGE FEE!!! ho, brah. awesome. think i going surf pau hana too.

i suppose this is where i should comment on my opposition to the war and the current regime but i really don't know what to say anymore - i will leave it to other, better informed, more articulate bloggers. my purpose here is to create a haven for beauty + love. welcome.

a couple more stories about movie night at don + tim's: stevie sez there were at least 35 guys there, one guy we met surfs 20-FOOT WAIMEA. he's a young, tall airport meteorologist and it was very nice talking with him! also, everyone kept asking me 'when are you leaving?' ... of course they didn't mean anything by it and i didn't even know it had really affected me that much - until i had a dream that night where my flight was leaving in 40 minutes. i was in a panic because i couldn't get the phone or computer to work so i could contact the airlines and extend my stay. i ended up breaking down + crying in the arms of a little local aunty. hawai'i is a place where you can feel good about yourself, and be happy. i no like leave!

tradewinds are back ... coolin us down on the job. winds stayed onshore (hot + stuffy from the south) all last week so surf stayed junk, which was ok so we didn't have to feel like we were missing anything while we worked: got the base cabinets built, tore out the old ones we're replacing. allowed the beer gods to unleash their wrath on us at gordon biersch on thursday, resulting in the previous loopy mo'blogs. [might be a good time to mention now that it's daylight savings time already, my entries are actually posted at hawaiian time = five hours earlier than they appear...] cozy rainy movie night up at don + tim's on saturday, watched 'infamous' - the other capote flick. winds had turned around by sunday morning, when we surfed pops. was supposed to be an iffy south bUmp comin thru and it seemed like it was - by the END of my 3-hour sesh. walking to the hula's beer bust that evening it seemed like the waves were perfect, especially at queens; surfed ok little curls at canoes this morning before work. got one good ride right when i got out - saw the wave comin and the beach boy paddling by on his stand-up board told me 'go, brother.' started on upper cabinets today - no doors yet.

great 1st full (almost) day @ work today - we're already turning that neat stack of flat lumber into 3-dimensions. ok solo pau hana surf - get waves but winds are onshore, so i did battle w/ monster mush for 2 hours but got some ok rides ... came home to stevie making a movie of my triumphant return, and also making a perfect tenderloin w/ apple for me while we watched 6 feet under on bravo.

aloha + happy sunday! the weekend is actually the weekend now that we started the job: thursday we rented a car (the guy at the counter talked steve into a $3 upgrade by talking about how big i was) to get / order materials and bring tools to the job site, after furikake crusted seared ahi work lunch at niko's (where we ran into alan the big demolisher in full dirty demolition gear) we took that sporty compact subaru to the north shore. then we saw alan again, all cleaned up thursday night at chikos for jake's birthday! robert cazimero stopped by and even dropped in w/ the band for one guest vocal, making for a gorgeous, otherworldly 3-part harmony. friday we got bus passes + took a #2 back to the job site at the base of diamond head to wait for our materials to be delivered from city mill. they arrived in a huge flatbed truck with a beautiful shiny new cab, one guy unloaded our perfectly stacked and wrapped stuff with a forklift and the driver got steve's signature, gave me shakas when he left. plus there's a bolohead daddy workin down the street who stood outside and watched the whole thing. liking the new job so far. so excited about the job we partied the rest of friday away. went shopping on saturday, at don quixote (nee daiei) a nice japanese aunty asked me to look thru the milk on the top shelf to find the freshest stuff, "because you're tall and i only use it in my coffee." no luck, it was all MAR 20 but we had a laugh about it and she thanked me anyway. saturday night was a combination late birthday party for steve / late birthday party for tom-A-hawk + troy (feb 6th!) / welcome home tom-A-hawk pool party out at jimmy's magical party gardens in hawaii kai. so much fun and so much aloha w/ da boys ... stevie read this in the paper during black history month: "hawai'i is a place where you can feel good about yourself, and be happy." ... good fun /schmallkine schwell surf at canoes w/ a surprisingly daring tom-A-hawk drOp this morning, tonight is the our fifth anniversary of going to da big honolulu festival parade!

wow feels so good to be back in the water ... yesterday my paddling felt nice + strong as i went out for the 1st time, this morning we made POPS by 8:30 and had a great fun sesh there - a building swell w/ some inconsistent size but some very consistent size from the nice local dudes that were out there w/ us. jimmy came out to join us + welcome me back towards the end of our sesh. he said he was at canoes thinking we left already but then he saw someone out at pops get a crazy long ride + realized dat person was so tall must be tom-A-hawk! jimmy said a few things w/ 1 of my boyz and when i asked if he knew him he said 'no, but i will...' well, steve + i took our last waves in pretty soon after that, and my 2 fave local bros took theirs in right behind us! i had a nice shower chat w/ the 'big arms + shoulders' guy - he's da 1 called the conditions 'inconsistent' ... after a foster's oilcan + a schmoke we made TheBus jus in time to hit IRIFUNE for lunch! surf nap rocked da rest of da afternoon ... mmmzzzz...

yes i'm back in hawai'i. free wireless lasted like 20 minutes - so i bought some. first full day today, got out for a swim in little waves on a sandbar in front of the royal hawaiian, then steve made us a big ahi + eggs brunch. awesome nap before a fun warmup surf sesh at canoes pau hana w/ steve + me doing choreographed slater + o'brien moves, then we got mochiko chicken at L+L - the waikiki L+L has great mochiko, nice grilled savor w/ green onions cooked into the batter - mmm ... gonna try to get out the door before 8 tomorrow morning for another surf - lucky south swell supposed to be comin in! good night!

in the three weeks since i've been back in minneapolis i have adapted to winter life, learning to tolerate the coldest weather in three years by constructing an elaborate romantic metaphor: i have transformed a domestic situation that could have easily become a breeding ground for cabin fever into a scenario that involves being snowed-in at a ski lodge, where i stock up on supplies, cook at home, make cocoa and snuggle with my rescue dog for warmth at night. all while enjoying the luxury of being able to hike a couple minutes to the nearby village to buy more groceries, rent 'six feet under' dvds and use the free wireless as i curl up with baby by the firepit at the chalet, i mean coffee shop.

this shameless self-delusion has gone along nicely with the general excess grandiosity of aquarian birthday season (mine - and my mom's, and james dean's ! - is on thursday ... thanks stevie for the bday care package* from hawai'i!). i've actually been working in the occasional cab ride on my few forays out into the frozen world - my blacked-out date harassed chris r at the hot p-cons / hockey night show on friday; a little soiree at the caterpillar with kimberland, and her latest fave dj bach, got me out of the house after the super bowl sunday night, to meet up w/ bday bro jcat before he jetted back to his new home in seattle. but now there are actual concrete plans being made to bring tom-A-hawk back to the islands, an urgent airlift to employ me on another solid hawaiian custom cabinet job with steve, and to spare me from at least one more month of what truly is a cold and brutal way to live. it's much easier to deal with winter when you have an escape plan - otherwise i swear my fun little winter daydream could develop into a serious "the shining"-style psychosis.

but i'm not there yet. i'm taking my supplements and i'm on my tonic, i woke to very pretty, delusion-reinforcing snow falling this morning, which has tapered off and i should go shovel now. my mystery neighbor's free wireless has been down for days, so i'll go to the chalet, i mean coffee shop, to post this later.

chinatown happy hour w/ kurt was the great escape from tired waikiki nightlife ... actually ended up going down an alley to the mercury lounge not bar 35; where, kurt tells us, shoes are required. fine by me, since i've been to bar 35 already, wearing slippers if i remember correctly, so was fun to check out a new venue. draft bass + cool graphic novel / anime style art on the walls = another nice addition to the downtown scene. got a chance to hang out a little in kurty's reclaimed apartment before we went out, is good to see him enjoying his new urbanism so much. clothes in the dryer, stevie whippin up a late brunch, hopefully a little pau hana surf in a little bit - checked the waves and queen's is lookin even better than the nice farm animal DUDE that was checkin me out down there. [down where?]

ran into jimmy for a fun pau hana sesh @ canoes on wednesday, lots of fun lines to shoot, and cute boys to cruize, surfed into overcast dusk as the amber hotel room lights of waikiki started coming on; another pau hana @ pops yesterday, tom-A-hawk solo this time for some steep faces, fun drops, paddled back in under a spectacular sunset. went to mc's place last night to watch his new holy grail special order dvd that just arrived: 'sunrise,' a silent film by 'nosferatu' director f.w. murnau, w/ still-amazing depth + cinematic composition ... after that we took off and hit chiko's again for live hawaiian music, spontaneous hula, and of course, choke cute boys ... who won't look at me !!! ;( but it's all good of course. everybody's just there to have fun w/ their buds, + plus i got to meet quinn. jus pau 1 ok canoes sesh now - funny crowd ... but of course you can't complain - you're in the water in hawai'i! going for a little bohemian happy hour w/ kurty downtown @ bar 35 now, surf video nite @ kenzen's tomorrow nite, pau beach beer bust @ hula's sunday night ... until tom-A-hawk leaves it ain't nothin but a party y'all. hana hou!

off da grid on maui: three day retreat at camp ulupalakua, featuring ono grinds, a solar + propane heated hot tub soak, solar + diesel generated tunes, 6 dogs, 1 horse, 2 pigs, + 2 petes. when you're spending most of your time in or around the ocean, it's good to take the opportunity to get the perspective of some elevation, put some distance between yourself + sea level. we took the crazy interisland airfare-wars as just such an opportunity, got tickets to maui for $42 each on island air. our vacation from our vacation was like a weekend at the cabin, soaking up the powerful mana on the ridge of the most recent eruption of haleakala, which is not surprisingly now the home of hawaiian superman petie-john + his man [also a pete] ... tom-A-hawk even got to play some guitar! the view was pure country, of the la perouse lava fields with kahoolawe looking like a floating island in the lavender sunsets - at night it went completely dark, not a single city light to be seen. petie whipped up some roots local teri chicken + potato-mac salad one night, we took him out for a big piece of local beef at the ulupalakua ranch store, and grabbed a huge take-out ahi patty sandwich plate at da kitchen right before we got back on our de havilland dash 8 prop plane. got back to the condo in waikiki with sand from little beach still on my toes [and maybe a few other places] ... aloha nui loa + much mahalos pete + pete! maui no ka oi !!!

i'm getting maui-ed n da morning... aloha

canoes this morning w/ steve, then steve left to take care of business downtown, then jimmy + jake showed up. surfed 10-1, steve met back up w/ us after for lunch at me's korean ... jimmy said was better than yesterday: less wind, more (smallkine) waves. now that i can actually catch a wave, turn, and find a line with some kind of frequency i'm starting to realize i still kind of look like a mess out there, but it's still nice to have these pics jake got today ... 1st pics of tom-A-hawk on da wave ... jimmy looks like a rock star, of course - gotta remember to surf backside + face the cam next time!

aloha kaua - i haven't worn socks for a month. never surfed today - wind + rain, cuz.

alan's party was even bigger than last year, fireworks were crazy all night, w/ a midnight explosion of illegal aerials up + down kalihi. took new year's day off surfing, hiked to diamond head beach for a little afternoon delite swim + au naturel sun w/ stevie. had to agree with him afterwards when he said, 'i liked the naked part.' [my regular readers will recall that i started this tradition last year.]

tuesday + wednesday conrad took us back to camp for more epic wesside waves - some big ones rollin through there ... and the waves were pretty big too! this one time, at rest camp, i got a pretty sweet ride. well ok more than one time really ... was great to get the chance to hang out + surf w/ conrad this time! tuesday night jimmy had us out to hawaii kai for a barbecue + hot tub soak at his condo's crazy pool/party gardens; last night marked our return to chiko's! i want a "i [heart] chiko's" t-shirt ... i've realized on this visit that i'm kind of way over hula's - too cliquey! 2 hi sku! - but chiko's has great food + cute boys [wow especially super nice + hospitable + tall + dreamy owner quinn; to whom i have referred, up to this point, with undisguised affection, as 'chiko' - dudes i'm crushin bigtime sorry cannot help it ... but you know come to think of it our excellent server was pretty nice too ... + you gotta love a guy named herb], plus the sexy down-low vibe suits me just fine. jake led the charge on karaoke and our table backed him up on a respectable 'carolina in my mind' - steve followed it up with a curious styling of 'delta dawn' ... he admitted afterward that he hates that song. wanna go back for live local music next thursday 1/11 9-midnite ... c u there + say hi this time !!!

hey! sorry i missed ya - surf nap. conrad's coming here @ 8, we'll go chiko's around 9 ...
