i went to a qi gong class today. i have my instructor's dvd + have done it a few times - the last time, fairly recently, me + baby did qi gong together! - but i haven't been to an actual class for about a year. they don't offer it at the yw anymore, but now my instructor leads a free class in the loring park park building, mondays at 1:15 pm ... the new location is amazing: a huge room with rows of arched windows looking out over the park and the lake w/ its flocks of birds and majestic, classical architecture in the background. before the class i was thinking it was a pretty dreary day. afterwards, i marveled at the exquisite beauty of it.

skyway news from babyG: Hawaiikiki (733 Marquette Av. S., Minneapolis) is throwing its own version of Hawaii's annual Aloha Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 27. The skyway-level shop, which serves Kona coffee and shaved ices [sic*], will feature live ukulele music, hula dancing, hula lessons and more. [*it's 'shave ice']
i know it's kind of old news by now but i know at least a few people are still going to ask me so i think it still applies: as far as we know, our condo is fine. the first guests to arrive at our hot tub party last sunday gave us the news that there had been a big earthquake in hawai'i - i jumped online and concluded, since the center was just off the west coast of the big island and the news didn't say anything about it, that they hadn't really noticed anything on o'ahu (where our place is) other than the power going out. so i returned to what was now an earthquake party. people asked me all week how the condo fared and i assured them nothing had happened on o'ahu. then i finally got around to checking surf buddy michael's 'blog last week, and after slogging thru the acres of youtube clips and arcane cocktail knowledge i finally learn that yes, indeed, michael - who lives one neighborhood away from us, in kaimuki - was woken up at 7 a.m. by an earthquake, and that even for someone who has gone through a few 'fun' tremors like mc, this one was kind of scary! i guess it just kept going... so our little concrete box on the sixth floor did get a shake! no one lives there when we're gone so after being assured by the building desk staff that everything is 'back to normal' at the kuhio village it remains to be seen if anything fell off a shelf and broke - we get there december 4 so i'll let you know. [kind of cosmic in my mind that in the week following the quake the waves started going off all over the island and my plane ticket to go back finally came through...]

i guess it's only appropriate that i'm finally getting the chance to write my first real entry for the new site just an hour or so after getting my plane ticket to hawai'i for the holidays ... auspicious begets auspicious. i'm working for my friend mark - my longtime readers will remember that working for mark this time of year usually involves 'blog entries - and tickets to hawai'i...
o where have i been??? i've said it before - if it wasn't for the mo'blog i wouldn't have no 'blog at all.
after the blessed arrival of my new macbook - which i christened 'baby' - in june, without consciously deciding to do so i just ended up taking the summer off from long-format entry duties, using the time instead to immerse myself in superior technology and design, to reacquaint myself with mac speak, to relearn mac ways, and begin to know mac magic.
since then baby has taken me on many journeys and taught me many things, baby also traveled with me to the bay area a few weeks ago - baby's first trip! - where baby got to feed on berkeley's 'village main' wireless and almost 500 new songs from kdogg's new place. k + i went to see m. ward at the fillmore and lo who is opening but my favorite punk rock uncle mike watt, catchin him live in cali for the first time, hyped on his third gig with his new 'missingmen' lineup - m. ward was good, but the three of them were the show - felt like i was at a minutemen show ... the image i carry with me and treasure from that trip is the sight of watt's new drummer raul morales, looking like he might as well be george hurley's teenage son - workin, beatin, sweatin away back there but never once taking his eyes off watt - the whole set, he just kept watching daddy...
