The overwhelming consensus among South Shore locals is that the summer of 2008 goes down as the best and most consistent seasons in decades. After last year¹s extended wave drought, anything would have looked good, and despite some funky winds, surfers enjoyed day after day after day of head high to well overhead bombs from Sandy Beach to Yokohama Bay, and the vibe on the beach and in the water was great as everyone got their fill. Heck, even the Bowls guys were giving away set waves!!!

right on, bros ... was a great summer to learn my new break.

my macbook is still partially charged with free solar electricity from da petes' farm in ulupalakua, upcountry maui. went for a long weekend retreat, extending the surfmonk metaphor to their remote mountainside enclave, for all practical purposes a monastery, as far as i was concerned ... sank gratefully into cool, almost chilly nights cozy in bed alone. communed with the fruit trees, flowers, pigs, the horse; but especially the dogs, some of whom came lovingly to me from my dreams: the big black dog and the big white dog, who in my dream turned from one to the other, appeared on maui side by side before me, begging their alms of affection, nurturing my spirit in return. came on the heels of a night pilgrimage a couple weeks before, up to the top of makapu'u to view the perseid meteor shower, the elusive pleasure of stars shooting across the heavens. now it is late august already and feels like it, even here in hawai'i. the angle of the sun is unmistakable. surfed with turtles today.

working on a self-imposed surfmonk existence - writing in my dream journal as i drink my morning coffee, surfing, working on my new recording, writing 'blog entries, defrosting food - well, until my next paycheck anyway ... fed my last $2 to the lucky lions on hotel street during the 888 olympic block party in chinatown on friday. still wriggle inside with pleasure when i remember the visceral experience of having firecrackers going off as the lion nibbled up my body and took the bill from my giddy hand with a hidden body part into its hot, humid mouth ... ! made for a heightened state of consciousness with which to witness the olympic opening ceremonies at 8:08 ... 'what channel is it on???' asks beefy keali'i @ ke kai's. '... eight ... !!!' i tell him ...
needless to say, the ceremony was a heightened state of consciousness unto itself, so gorgeously massive and mesmerizingly perfect that i could not help but feel like i was witnessing an era-defining moment in the history of civilization; as china demonstrated, to a worldwide audience, its cultural power and vast potential.
after i sent out my 'happy 888' texts i got one back from jason that said -
Aw.... Thx.
Something
auspicious has
gotta happen

I'm not Chinese. ;)
i replied -

as i wait for the bus on kalanianaole, as i haul my recycling by hand and foot to aina haina elementary school, as i pick up my self-mandated minimum of one piece of rubbish from kawaikui beach park every time i visit [even when i have a surfboard under my arm], as i do these things i am subject to a dual sensation of contentment and sadness; the contentment of feeling like i'm doing my small part to add to the collective solution, the sadness of feeling like i'm the only one doing so, as new litter appears every time i visit the beach park, as my roommates thoughtlessly throw their recyclables in the rubbish, as the endless stream of one-passenger cars speeds past me on kalanianaole.
is this sensation just bourgeois guilt?
is my contentment self-serving?
is my sadness hypocritical?

i've started my own personal summer reading program ... i grab whatever strikes my fancy off the shelf of the library at work and tear through it cover to cover. after taking all year to read 'prague,' so far this summer i've given in to my inner 13-year-old fantasy geek and read 'eragon,' then imagined captain cook's first contact with hawai'i in 'the return of lono,' now i'm getting inspired to garden and cook again with 'under the tuscan sun' ... fun!

at my new place
at my new place, in my room, white plumeria and red hibiscus bloom outside my window and cardinals sing when i play music. the neighbors keep rabbits whose hutches i can see through my bathroom window. there is one rabbit, apparently escaped from these hutches, who continues to live in our yards, occasionally causing a stir when it comes back to visit its captive family, to commune with them through the mesh. this rabbit seems to have become quite comfortable with its assessment that i do not intend to recapture it, as it doesn't run away from me when i pass through the yard, under the mango tree, and say hello on my way to or from the bus, even when i pass quite close.
[written on 6/12/08 ... as there is no wireless at my new place it has taken me this long to post it. in the meantime i have learned that there are actually (at least) TWO escaped rabbits.]

Osbert Sitwell was well acquainted with the story. He says that the deserters included French, Italians, Germans, Austrians, Australians, Englishmen, and Canadians; they lived
--at least they lived--in caves and grottoes under certain parts of the front line...They would issue forth, it was said, from their secret lairs, after each of the interminable checkmate battles, to rob the dying of their few possessions...
(Chas - The Great War and Modern Memory, Paul Fussell)
It looks just as unappetizing as before, only greasier. I sigh and place it, along with overcooked rice, on a tray.
I’m making the banana squash at the request of my father.
(Anne - Queen of Dreams, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni)
…We turned off the highway on to the slip road, and then off it, past a jhopadpatti, into darkness. Our beams conjured up a dusty road, trees sliding into existence and out again, it was like falling into a tunnel. I went eagerly into it.
(Macha - Sacred Games, Vikram Chandra)
Pumaia keeps back one favorite pig which he has vowed shall die a natural death. Kuali'i sends messengers to demand this last hog, but Pumaia kills each messenger until none are left. Finally, Kuali'i catches, binds, and kills Pumaia and throws his bones into the pit with others.
(Kevin - Hawaiian Mythology, Martha Beckwith)
They were all filthy, and they all wore hats with broken bells. One of them kicked David in the shin.
"Ow!" said David.
(MC - The Book of Lost Things, John Connolly)
They played precisely one show before sullivan went off to college, then drafted singer Nathan Strejcek after Garfield turned down the gig and renamed themselves the Teen Idles.
The Teen Idles, MacKaye said, were "trying to get away from a really corupted music, you know, basically your heavy metal bands that were into heroin, cocaine, just a lot of drinking. We just drank a lot of Coke and ate a lot of twinkies."
(tom-A-hawk - Our Band Could Be Your Life, Michael Azerrad)
